Love and death. Death and love. Two elementary forces of human existence, as Patrick Süskind notes in his collection of essays On Love and Death (Über Liebe und Tod). Love and death are also the common denominator of Shakespeare’s tragedies, in which he offers a mostly varied array of loves and deaths. Love leads to death and death to love. Metaphors. Instead of love we might put marriage. Hence marriage and death. White and black. At times it is only when someone passes away that one realises how much one loved him. We know what we are but we don’t know what we might become. To love deadly. Marriage leads to death. Metaphor? We are at once so close and distanced from each other. Far away so close.
