Astrov’s story is not merely one of success but also one of a grieving and lonely contemporary subject who defines himself as a weirdo ("… there is no flame in front of me. I don’t expect anything for myself anymore, I don’t like people … I do not love anybody.”). Somewhere along the way he has forgotten about emotions. Now he is projecting them into the brighter future while he aimlessly dreams of a harmonious life with nature. Astrov is a contemporary man, a dissatisfied, anxious grouch, tragic in his inability to change anything.
